A trip to Spain without the airfare cost? Not a problem with George Ezra’s new release, “Barcelona.” English singer and songwriter, George Ezra, is an up-and-coming artist who rose to fame thanks to his hit single, “Budapest,” during 2014. He released his album, “Wanted on Voyage,” under Columbia Records during June 2014. The album peaked at the No. 1 spot in the UK charts, and he was nominated for four Brit Awards that same year. Ezra performs in a folk-pop style, drawing from icons such as Bob Dylan and Hank Williams. Ezra released “Barcelona” as a single Aug. 28. “Barcelona” uses Spanish guitar to create a flavor of the Spanish coast. It creates a breezy, laid-back atmosphere which pairs well with Ezra’s low, gritty voice. Overall, the song feels like early morning in Spain  sunny and relaxed. Ezra based his songs from his “Wanted on Voyage” album on a European tour he took during 2013. He used his songs to retell experiences he had while abroad, and “Barcelona” is a perfect example. Ezra tells the story of a girl he met in Barcelona, and while they can’t be together, he still thinks of her whenever he thinks of his trip. The line, “Shut my eyes and you know, I'll be lying right by your side, in Barcelona,” is particularly powerful. Overall, Ezra does a good job of transporting the listener across the Atlantic with his imagery of his experience abroad. The snappy guitar and background instruments that might first go unnoticed, such as the maracas and hand-clapping, combine to create a very Spanish vibe. The song is somewhat slow-paced though, and listeners can’t help but wish Ezra would pick up the tempo at some point. Instead, the song feels like a lazy Sunday morning in Barcelona. Overall Rating — 7/10
